About Medical Aid in Dying
Medical aid-in-dying is a trusted and time-tested medical practice that allows a terminally ill adult to request and receive a prescription for medication that they may choose to take, or not, to bring about a peaceful death. To qualify, 4 strict criteria must be met: The individual must be an adult over age 18, lucid – making their healthcare decisions voluntarily and without coercion, terminally ill within 6 months or less, and able to self-ingest the medication. It is the goal of Compassion & Choices to make medical aid-in-dying an open, accessible option in all states, and a standard of care for end-of-life options.
Compassion and Choices is leading the effort to authorize, implement and defend medical aid in dying so that all individuals who qualify can received the end-of-life care they want. Facing a terminal illness without viable treatment options is a daunting, personal and overwhelming experience. Stripped of their future with family and friends, one’s autonomy and independence dissolves. Having agency over how and when they pass is sometimes the last decision making freedom they command.
Medical aid in-dying has overwhelming support in Michigan and nationally at over 73%. It is
not assisted suicide, suicide, or euthanasia. These terms are misleading and by definition factually incorrect.
